Fik van Gestel
Fik Van Gestel’s oeuvre moves between abstraction and lyricism, approaching painting as an autonomous language. His immediate surroundings — the light, the greenery, the changing seasons — form a continuous source of inspiration. In this way, he has developed a visual language that is sensitive and sensory, rooted in nature yet always directed toward the pure act of painting.
Over the years, Van Gestel has refined his practice to its subtleties. His pronounced sense of light and color goes hand in hand with a remarkable tactile sensitivity: the paint may appear heavy and opaque at times, then thin, muted or almost transparent at others. For him, the essence of painting lies in the act of painting itself — a physical as well as mental process in which observation, reflection and experience merge.
Although he does not work figuratively, he often starts from images that resonate in our collective memory, yet he places them on the threshold between recognizability and abstraction. This ambiguity, combined with his layered approach, invites the viewer to continue ‘reading’ the work and to contribute their own interpretation.
Fik van Gestel (b. 1951, Turnhout) lives and works in Gierle. He studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and played an important role in the revival of painting in the 1980s following the conceptual art movement. From 1985 to 2012, he was a lecturer at Sint-Lukas Brussels. In 2014, De Warande in Turnhout presented the retrospective exhibition Storm & Silence, dedicated to his oeuvre. His work is included in various public collections, including S.M.A.K. Ghent, MuZee Ostend, M HKA Antwerp, the National Bank of Belgium, the Flemish Community, KU Leuven, the European Central Bank in Frankfurt (DE), Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo (NL) and the University of Antwerp.
