Koen Deprez (1961) is a Belgian conceptual artist, architectural designer, essayist, curator, and researcher at the Faculty of Architecture of KU Leuven.
He studied and taught at the Sint-Lukas School of Arts and Architecture in Brussels and later obtained a PhD in Architecture at KU Leuven, where he currently also teaches. His dissertation, titled Apology for the Escape: the Use of Prioms as a Narrative Technique within the Design Work of Koen Deprez, reflects on his own work. The PhD consists of a comprehensive book and a series of narrative maps. Since their creation in 2019, these maps have often been added to his solo exhibitions. One of the key maps, Sea Battle with Witnesses, is presented in his recent exhibition WHITE, BLUE, AIR, CHESS and WAR. In addition to this map, the exhibition features new works, most of which stem from social developments over the past five years.
In Galerie Zwart Huis, five themes are highlighted. During the preparation, two years ago, some themes unexpectedly converged, leading to new connections and artworks. For instance, chess was linked to 'war', 'war' to 'air', 'air' to 'blue', and 'blue' finally to 'white'. The result is an exhibition with an endless series of interconnections.
Deprez considers himself an oeuvre artist, with his plans and interventions resulting in drawings, paintings, objects, and models that he regularly exhibits or brings to life in practice, such as recently at the Verbeke Foundation in Kemzeke.
