Jan De Vliegher

Pleasure Gardens

18.05.2025 - 15.06.2025

Jan De Vliegher’s Pleasure Gardens series captures the vibrant essence of nature through bold brushwork and radiant color. Drawing inspiration from historical gardens, floral arrangements, and shimmering water reflections, De Vliegher blurs the boundaries between figuration and abstraction. With expressive strokes and a luminous palette, he transforms fleeting natural impressions into dynamic visual experiences.

His paintings are defined by energetic, gestural brushstrokes and a refined use of color, often applied wet-on-wet to preserve spontaneity and intensity. In these works, dappled light flickers across the surface, suggesting the ever-changing play of sunlight on leaves or petals. When figures appear, they remain secondary to the overwhelming vitality of the natural world, which dissolves into expressive marks and vibrant hues.

De Vliegher’s artistic approach has often been compared to that of 19th-century Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla, particularly for his shared fascination with light and its emotional resonance. As one critic observed: “De Vliegher constantly transforms the physical world into a pictorial one. Like Sorolla, he paints a reality imbued with joy, using pure, fresh, and unblended colors.” His work follows in the tradition of artists who celebrate the transformative power of painting to convey atmosphere, light, and movement.
The Pleasure Gardens series invites viewers to lose themselves in a sensorial experience of nature’s brilliance. These large-scale canvases offer more than botanical imagery—they immerse the viewer in a vibrant, shifting world where nature and perception converge in a single, radiant vision.
