Isola Comacina

Karen Vermeren (°1982) is fascinated by natural landscapes reminiscent of geological times: landslides, fractions and natural processes. Just like a natural landscape, she tries to make her works liveable, changeable and without boundaries. Unusual materials (acrylic, plastic film and tape) are used directly on walls, floors, windows or ceilings. She makes temporary murals, which are only limited by the space itself. In intense color schemes she evokes a kind of landscapes that are neither abstract nor figurative.

For the series Isola Comacina Karen Vermeren created a painting on the window of the gallery. The installation was only visible from outside. She found inspiration in Isola Comacina, an island in the Italian Lake Como, where she stayed in the summer of 2011 in the residence of the Flemish Community. The big lakes in Northern Italy were formed by glaciers during the ice ages. Vermeren brings these carved valleys and lakes in relation to the North Sea.

Karen Vermeren lives and works in Brussels. She studied painting at the Art School Sint-Lucas in Ghent and obtained a Masters in Visual Research at the Karel de Grote Hogeschool Sint Lucas in Antwerp. Since 2009 she has been a lecturer and a researcher.
