Jan Vanriet

Gezichtverlies

16.05.2010 - 27.06.2010

Zeedijk 635 - Knokke
Vanriet's exhibition 'Gezichtverlies' presents a small series of portraits of deportees from the Dossin barracks in Mechelen, Belgium. He makes us of a monumental publication from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Jewish Museum of Deportation and Resistance in Mechelen: Mechelen-Auschwitz 1942-1944. There are four books with more than eighteen thousand photos of people who were deported to German camps during WWII. The series is an obvious successor to his previous exhibitions 'Transport and Meikever' and 'Fly!' which tell an impressive contemporary story about the human condition.

Vanriet's work combines a multitude of themes (religion, violence, abuse of power) with various stylistic features ranging from figurative to abstract, minimalist to exuberant. He finds his inspiration in his family's history, in society and in art history.
